Hey it's been a while since I have had a comic out, I've been busy with my day job and also helping to put Bent-con together. As of today I give myself permission to indulge my ADD and to post/publish pages from the half dozen stories I am working on in my head as they are completed, not chaining myself to one or another, which tends to get me stuck, creatively.

Stories I am working on are:
Stray Bullet - Continuing stories of Feral, the Ghost Skater, and Doug.
Code Blue - Zane and Gunnar and sex-life after death.
Loose - the Ghost Skater's journey through the otherworlds to keep a crazed Feral in check.
the Rubicon - my sci-fi epic. a martian cat-burglar becomes an agent of freedom.
the Curious Case of the Persuasive Pup - a "Lovecraftian" tale written by Daniel Stewart and myself.
the Old Man and the Fish - a young man's new pet has a very old and evil soul, written by Steve Lozier.
oh, and of course;

comic strip for "the fight" magazine

So I've been advertising in "the Fight" magazine, a gay and lesbian free magazine that strives to be a quality above the usual rag. I like it, the politics of the mag are spot on, and the look of the thing makes it look like it costs money, yet it is free. It is a good read while being something your mom could look at.
Anyways, they had asked me to develop a comic strip to serialize in the magazine, the first installment in November's issue.

Now there is an MMA magazine called "Fight", but don't get them confused. It does get confusing, especially

since I decided to go with a story idea I'd had for a while dealing with a gay Mixed Martial Artist who'd grown up in a home full of domestic violence and how that affects him as a person, fighter, and partner.

Above is the finished piece. At least until I though... wait! They did not say it has to be B&W! So I colored it.

My partner Daniel has been acting as my editor on this. Thanks, baby!

So I've been slacking on the blog here. Been busy trying to keep the shop afloat and planning bent-con and such. I will be more forthcoming toot suite.

my first kindle experience... guy endore's "the werewolf of paris"

So I had finished an awesome collection of horror stories that I had honestly just picked up because of the neato Edward Gorey dust jacket. The book was called "Masterpieces of Terror and the Supernatural" and edited by Marvin Kaye.

But that isn't what this post is about. Marvin Kaye included a further reading list, and on that list was "the Werewolf of Paris" by Guy Endore, said to be for wolfmen what "dracula" is for vampires and Shelly's "frankenstein" is for flesh golums.

Needless to say I wanted to read it.
The book itself is out of print and as such is pretty rare. Used paperback copies can be from 10 to 100$. Hardback up to several hundred!
So I checked and the LA public library has a copy, but Daniel suggested I get it on Kindle (he'd just bought a kindle a few months earlier).
$2.99!
So I took the plunge. I was skeptical of the kindle at first, but I like it just fine. I find the typos amusing... they show that a program digitizes the pages, because now human would misspell "flair" as "l4air". So it ends up being like reading a dialect.

I am about two thirds through the book. I like it, some parts more than others.

The story begins with a lineage history that results in the genetic mutation of the werewolf character. The present day of the story is Napoleonic France. There is a lot of taboo sexual situations, squirm inducing ones. The grossest scene so far involved a banquet sampling alternative meats for the besieged parisians (like rat, dog, cat, raccoon, et.al.). The best scene so far was one of the few from the P.O.V. of the werewolf, as he escapes his captivity and runs through the night, taking his clothes off and making a kill. His senses don't change but how his body behaves does, as he thinks to strangle a victim but rends it's throat with his teeth, thinks to carry the body away but instead pulls with his maw and pushes against the ground with four legs.

This is the back of my great client Anthony. As you may have guessed, his nick-name is "ANVIL". I did this tattoo sometime in '08 or '09.

Anthony is an American who was living in Switzerland I believe when I first met him. He travels a lot for work, but also because he is a Strongman competitor. He now lives in Spain and is co-owner of the Eagle Madrid/FEUL (F3).

So here's something i have been mulling about adding to my over-extended schedule: flash. Tattoo flash. I have tons of unused tattoo sketches from over the years... why not develop them into flash and give them a new life? I think I tried something like this 12 years ago at Gotham in San Francisco. I'll add a new one every week or so, and while it is posted as the "flash of the week" it will be available at a reduced rate.

And so, here is design number one. A great number of them are heart designs, but I will attempt to rotate them in every half dozen or so.

Hey all, trying to catch up with my blog. Back in June my boyfriend Daniel took me to see STRIKEFORCE:Live at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
We’ve been to the UFC in Vegas, and King of the Cage a few times in Highland at the San Manuel casino. We saw a simulcast of UFC 111 at a theatre in Burbank, and when I heard that Strikeforce was doing a show in L.A. I knew what I wanted to do for my birthday, but sadly, Daniel said he couldn’t afford tickets so we went to see another UFC simulcast (ufc 115) the saturday beforehand instead.
Well the fucker tricked me and totally surprised me with tickets to Strikeforce as well. Not only that, but the seats were 4th row.
Fucking shit.

Now the closer you get you can’t see any ground action because of the raise of the cage floor, but we got to see a lot of MMA stars close up who were walking past the front row and saying hi to fans. Jens Pulver in particular was very friendly and spent a good amount of time hanging out and talking to people. Dean Lister walked by close enough to touch. Handsome fella. Gabe Ruediger looked pretty cool with his facial hair and these guys all look a lot bigger in person, like bulgey. Jason Miller had a mob all over him.
A lot of the bigger stars had seats up behind the stage near the cameras, of course.
I took a few shots of Robbie Lawler fighting Babalu, but the cage actually makes the images look pixelated.

All in all a great time, and we were able to take the subway there. Cool!
In a few weeks is a fight at the Palladium, which I can walk too.
Can’t ask for more than that!

Comic-con 2010 pt.1

So this was the first time I had done all 4 days of the convention. I had fun, worked the booth half of each day, and discovered that my comics have a devoted following. I’d have to say my biggest moment was when I meet a guy who had Doug’s necklace of Mitch’s mummified finger replicated as a prop and was wearing it at the convention.

This is a picture Daniel took of himself to show a friend the tattoos I have done on him. The bands are the oldest, the victorian work in between the bands were next. He had a C’thulhu idol tattooed on his calf after that, and last summer we did the lion’s head on his chest. What is next?

Honestly, I thought it was just an S.F. local thing. Then I discovered that it was that same mag that has Rachel Maddow on the cover, and an interview of her done by Joe Jervis a.k.a. JoeMyGod. So I just signed a lease on my own shop. I’ll be tattooing out of it starting June 1st!
It is a really great space, next to the Faultline bar in Silver Lake. I’ve decided to call it MARGINALIZED.
As well as tattooing, I’ll be selling my own shirts, prints of artwork, and my own comicbooks as well as those of friends.
Hours will be noon til 8pm Saturday, monday, tuesday, thursday and friday. Closed sunday and wednesday, so no tattoos during beer bust

Inkslinger's Ball and Dead Rats

Hollywood used to have it’s own little tattoo convention, the Inkslinger’s Ball. The convention was at the Palladium on Sunset bd, and I have no idea why it doesn’t happen anymore. It was nice to have a local tattoo convention, now we have to get out to Long Beach, or Anaheim, or even Pamona. Not that I really go to many tattoo cons.
I went to the Inkslinger’s Ball a couple of times. The first time was in 2001, just days after 9/11. The attendance was supposedly a little down because no one was flying then. I had driven up from San Diego (where I was living at the time) with my friends Dave Gilstrap and Brian Franey. It was fun, tho Gilstrap, whose ethnicity is something of a mystery, got hassled by some skinheads. In the contest, Gilstrap got 3rd place in tribal with the work I did on him.
My favorite thing about that day was the latex rat I bought. It was cast from an actual dead rat. It even had a few hairs stuck in it! It was the realest looking fake dead rat I have ever seen. I took it to work. I left it in the storeroom by the refrigerator. Soon the ditsy counter girl went for some coffee and boy did she scream. I think I lost points with her that day. I kept it by my station, but clients were getting to freaked out by it. So I moved it to my car. I left it in that little gully between the seats behind the shifter, where change collects. I forgot about it. People would lean in the window to talk, or first time passengers would at some point stop talking… I’d look over and see a look of horror on their faces- they’d found the dead rat.
Ah, good times.
So with in a couple of years the poor thing had deteriorated to small pieces from the heat of a car interior in southern California. Grud, I miss that rat. I wish the Inkslinger’s Ball was still around. I’d go look for another one.

This is a portrait of Luke, my friend Dean’s dog. Dean and I were roommates for about 3 years, and Dean adopted Luke weeks after moving into the house in Echo Park. I always wanted to paint his portrait, and I did so for Dean’s birthday last year. Personally, I think it is the best portrait I have done.

So, back in july, Daniel and I went to Vegas to see UFC 86. It was a week before our 2 year anniversary, so why not, eh? Headliners were Forest Griffon and Rampage Jackson, it was very exciting, and LOUD. I’ve never seen so many affliction shirts in my life. We had nosebleed seats, and as much as I tried to watch the actual fights, the giant projection screen just off to the left kept dragging my attention to it. I only remembered to take pics of the fights during the Cote v Almeida match. I wish I had remembered to during Koscheck v Lytle, which was probably the bloodiest fight I’ve ever seen. The lady next to me was covering her eyes, and so was Daniel.

Hey all, I just returned from working the San Diego Comicon, plying my wares, doing a timeshare table space with Steve MacIsaac. It was pretty fun, sold some prints, t-shirts, and of course some comics. Made some new friends and caught up with some old, and bought a load of comics, mostly some 2000AD stuff which is hard to find these days, so I stock up at their comicon booth each year. This is the first year I’ve worked this convention, I’ve volunteered and done signings at Prism’s booth, but this year Prism got a double-booth and sublet time-shares out to a bunch of us to set up mini-shops. It was a good, busy time, but now I must catch up on some SLEEP!!!

Hard to swallow #4 back cover

For those who don’t know, Justin Hall and I take turns with the front and back covers of our comic book Hard to Swallow. The issue in production now (#4), Justin is doing the front, so I am doing the back. I just finished this one, and I love it. I’ve had this page from a small newspaper with kids portraying different emotions in a grid, kind of a guide to what feelings look like. I’ve had it on my fridge for years, always wanting to do something with it someday. The current Feral story has the biggest cast I’ve worked with so far, so it seemed like a perfect situation to use this layout for a cover. I tried to switch the emotions up with characters that wouldn’t normally be seen with that particular expression on his face…

Another old one, just making it into the gallery. Sometimes years go by between doing the tattoo and getting a picture of it. I finished this one in 2004, got a pic in 2008 when Hector came in to consult about sleeving the arm out, connecting to this chest piece. Looks good at 4 years. It’s a tibetan deity (Mahakala, I believe), and now he has a Green Tara started next to it on the upper arm.

This is a backpiece I finished a couple of years ago… and this is the best pic I have of it. Could be a worse photo, I suppose. I love the piece, though: It is an Amerind in wings and eagle head hood, with a buffalo head in the smoke about him.

It's 2008 and been 4 years since the last DOGSPUNK tee shirt. Well I finally took a break from drawing everything I should have been drawing instead and did up a new design, and sent it off to jakprints (whom I highly recommend for apparel printing). White and blood red on black 100% cotton American Apparel tees. Should be available in 2 weeks! I'll post when they are available.

Another old piece, this one was a 2 page spread for OUT magazine. I like the piece, but conceptually a nightmare. The art director wanted a "summer fun" scene in hell, and specifically wanted a devil evocative of my character the Grey Otter. The piece originally had this devil driving the dune buggy, and the surfer on the wave of flame was a devil as well. The magazine editor saw the original sketch and freaked out; the magazine in no way wanted to appear to promote Satan. So, demonic reference was erased, and there we have the piece as it is now, which makes little sense.
I still like it though. I rarely do a piece only in illustrator these days.
BTW, the devil sign (being made by the passenger in the buggy) slipped past the editor :)

Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service

File under "comics I am reading". The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is a Japanese series, released in the US by Dark Horse Manga. I picked it up out of curiosity when the first book came out, and was interested enough to pick up the second. This is good, because the book really starts to hit it's stride in the second book. It has quickly become one of my favorites, probably my favorite current Japanese title. The story line involves a group of Buddhist students with unusual powers or skills that band together in a business venture to carry out the wishes of the recently deceased so that they may rest in peace. The central character Karatsu is a medium of sorts, who has the ability to speak with the recently dead. He also seems to be haunted by a powerful ghost whose intentions are a mystery... thus far it seems to be a benefactor, but clues are pointing to possible nefarious origins to this spirit.

Anyhow, the group finds early on that working for dead people is a failing business model, and are constantly trying to find ways to make it work. Stories have involved an Iraqi civilian whose body was accidentally shipped to Japan, a "bodyworlds" type scheme, a mummification scheme, an alien scheme, stolen kidneys speaking to Karatsu, a guest appearance from the lead character from Housui Yamazaki's book Mail, and unusual competing services. The writing is topical and savvy, and avoids temptations of cliche, such as the hacker/computer whiz character. She is very absent most of the time, which is good. Over-use of the wild-card is bad. The art style has grown on me. At first I was jarred by the juxtaposition of cutsey manga and horror imagery, but it works, and has improved over the run.

I hear there is a U.S. film being made based on these books. Hopefully if this is so it will be worthy of the comic.

This is one of the pieces I did for instigator magazine. I did some work I am really proud of for that magazine, but to say work with them was a nightmare would be an understatement. I'll get into it more in another post.

This piece accompanied an article about an Afghani warlord on trial. Many witnesses testifying against him made mention of the "human attack dog" the warlord kept in a hole in the ground. True story, supposedly.

Best Erotic Comics 2008

An anthology from Last Gasp was just released, planning on being the first in an annual series of the Best Erotic Comics. My piece "GIGANTIC" made it in, as did pieces by Steve MacIsaac and Justin Hall. The three of us attended the release event at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. Other artists in attendance were Trina Robbins and Daphne Gottlieb, as well as the editor Greta Christina and several big wigs from Last Gasp. It was the first panel I've been on, and a good time was had by all. The book is available on AMAZON. Or ask for it at your favorite book or comics shop! Or better yet, from Last Gasp themselves. They also carry Hard to Swallow comics!

Wacom and Dogspunk #1 second printing

I some months ago took the plunge and got a wacom tablet. I've been using a mouse for most of my life, so I suppose there will be some sort of learning curve, but so far I like it. It is weird, cuz I had developed a style that makes use of the weaknesses of the mouse, and now it is a moot point. Using the stylus with the tablet is a lot like painting, or pastels. So as a practice piece, I colored a new back cover to Dogspunk#1 using the tablet. Dogspunk #1 is getting orders from shops that require a bar code, so I had to get more printed anyhow, and decided to do some things like give it a better back cover, make some changes to the contents, editorial, and letters areas, and ditch the ka-blam ad in favor of some marginalized publications ads. Maybe the new back could sell as a poster too (minus the bar code, of course!)?

The interesting thing about selling comics through a magazine/book distributor is that after a while you get some back. This was a welcome surprise, because now we have a pile of HARD to Swallow #1 to sell... our stock had sold out some months ago. The bad thing about it is that some of these are damaged from all the shipping to and fro. These will be available at a discount, I suppose!

Except for some dialog changes, this page is pretty much the same as the one I did 15 years ago, in layout anyways. I like to think I draw better these days :)

I am working on a sci-fi story that I began developing in art school. My boyfriend at the time named it "The RUBICON". I've always had the intention of finishing it, and have had it percolating on the back burner for years now... working out the plot points, removing contrivances... and now it is ready to go. Issue #1 is scripted and blocked out, and the first finished couple of pages I chose to be the best scene to represent it as a preview in the PRISM Comics Guide 2008. The end product will be in color, but the guide is in black and white, so these are just line-work. At this point I haven't decided whether to present it serially in DOGSPUNK COMIX and collect it as a graphic novel when complete, or just start off as it's own series.

Hard to Swallow #3 is finally here!

SO this baby took a lot longer than expected. We really had printer hell with it. Brenner Printing, which printed the first 2 issue, decided that they are not printing adult material anymore. We started working with Morgan Printing, but they accidentally quoted us half of what they meant to, so at the last minute we went with Lebonfon, with which we really had some ridiculous communication problems. But, unless we want to pay a LOT more, or print overseas, they are the only game in town (or north america). This being said...
It looks great! Deadline problems allowed me to redo the cover art, which I love, especially compared to the one it would have had otherwise. The issue, like the one before it, is 8 pages longer, and a dollar more. So #1 was 48 pages and 6.99$, #2 was 56 and 7.99$, and this one is 64 pages and 8.99$. As you might guess, #4 will be 72 pages and 9.99$. So each issue is a little thinker and a bit more work. My Feral story in this issue is 22 pages, the longest story I've done so far! It has worked out that I've been writing slightly longer stories each issue.... my half of #4 may very well be one long Feral story!
So check it out, the book is available on the Marginalized Publications website, as well as the Last Gasp site and various book and comic-book stores about this naughty world.

I just did my second Radical Faerie Digest ad for Treasure Island Media. The first was okay, but this one is pretty good! Yule is the time that the Oak King gains dominance over the Holly King, so he get's to top. Some say the winner would want to bottom, but well, I figured a King would want to wield his scepter.

Comics I am reading

I just read LAIKA by Nick Abadzis, a graphic novel story of the first earthling in space, Laika, a little stray dog from the streets of Moscow. After the success of SPUTNIK, Khrushchev ordered a second flight to top the first satellite in space, and so only a month afterward a dog was launched into space. I can't say enough about this book, the art is beautiful, the writing is perfect, and it has so much heart. READ IT!!!

Did I mention that I got my mini printed up as a full sized book? There are a number of presses that will do small print runs of comics, but they all require that there be no naughty material. Since this book is basically pg rated, I went ahead and had some printed at KA-BLAM. It looks pretty good! You can buy one at marginalized publications.
